Roads are bad, so tomorrow's 9am service is cancelled. We'll livestream at 10 instead. Stay safe and stay home.
The bulletin only reaches whoever's holding it.
Announcements from the pulpit reach the people who made it that Sunday. A text reaches everyone else too - the family that was travelling, the member recovering at home, the volunteer who works weekends.
Church text messaging is a way for a congregation to receive announcements, prayer requests, service changes and event reminders directly by SMS instead of relying on the bulletin, the pulpit announcement or an email newsletter. Members opt in by texting a keyword shown on the screen or in the bulletin, and the church can then send to the whole congregation or to specific groups such as volunteers, small group leaders, youth parents or the prayer team. Because a text is read within minutes, it reaches people who missed the service and works for anything time-sensitive, from a weather cancellation to a last-minute volunteer gap.
Everyone who opted in - including the members who weren't there on Sunday, which is usually the point.
From $25/mo for 500 credits. Members are unlimited, so a growing congregation doesn't cost more to hold.
The church does. It's exportable and it stays yours if you ever change platforms.
Copy one, swap the details, send it. Each shows its character count and what it costs per member - messages over 160 characters cost two credits instead of one.

Thinking of you and your mother today. We prayed for her surgery this morning. Let us know how it goes.
Halfway through the week. Whatever you're carrying today, you're not carrying it alone. See you Sunday.
We're two short in the nursery this Sunday. If you can help for one service, reply YES and we'll sort the rest.
Reminder: you're on the welcome team this Sunday. Doors at 8:30. Reply R if you need to swap.
Forty of you showed up for the cleanup yesterday and it made a real difference. Thank you.

The roof fund is at [Amount] of [Goal]. Thank you for every bit of that. Details Sunday.
Glad you joined us Sunday. No pressure and no follow-up calls - but if you'd like coffee this week, just reply.
New small groups start in two weeks, days and times to suit most schedules. Reply GROUPS for the list.
An em dash, a curly quote or an emoji switches a message from GSM-7 to UCS-2 encoding, and the character limit drops from 160 to 70. A 120-character text that cost one credit suddenly costs two. Every sample above uses plain hyphens and straight quotes for that reason.
Most people who need prayer won't fill in a card, won't raise a hand, and won't call the office. Sending one word from the pew, or from a hospital car park at midnight, asks nothing of them.
Text is a channel, not a confidant. Sensitive pastoral matters still deserve a conversation - use it to open the door, not to replace the visit.
Snow on Saturday night, a burst pipe, a power cut. An email won't be opened before people leave the house and a Facebook post reaches whoever happens to scroll. A text reaches the whole congregation in minutes, which is the entire reason most churches sign up in the first place.
Two short in the nursery, nobody on sound, one van driver down. Message the volunteer group rather than ringing round twelve people, and take the first reply.
Travel, illness, a weekend shift. The announcement still gets to them.
Youth parents, small group leaders, the prayer team, choir. Not everyone needs every message.
A short, low-pressure note beats a phone call somebody didn't ask for.
Keywords are unlimited, so you can run several at once and know exactly which group someone belongs to.
Nonprofit and religious organisations get some latitude under US texting rules, but "some latitude" is not "no rules." Carriers still filter unregistered traffic, and a member who never asked to be texted can still opt out - or complain.
The simple version: message people who chose to join, honour opt-outs immediately, and don't upload the church directory as though everyone in it agreed.
General information, not legal advice. Worth a conversation with your board or counsel before you launch.
Plans start at $25 a month for 500 credits - one message to 500 members. Members and keywords are unlimited, so a growing congregation never costs more to hold.

Most commonly for service changes and weather cancellations, prayer requests, volunteer coordination, event reminders and follow-up with visitors. Members opt in by texting a keyword shown on the screen or in the bulletin, and the church can then message everyone at once or send to specific groups such as youth parents, the prayer team or the volunteer roster.
Plans start at $25 a month for 500 credits. One message to one member costs one credit, so reaching a congregation of 500 costs $25. Members and keywords are unlimited on every plan, so your list can grow without your bill growing. Credits never expire.
Yes. A member texts your prayer keyword, receives an immediate acknowledgement, and replies with their request in a two-way thread that only your pastoral team sees. It is not broadcast to the congregation. That said, text is a channel rather than a substitute for pastoral care - use it to open the door, not to replace the visit.
Yes. Nonprofit and religious organisations get some latitude under US texting rules, but consent still matters and opt-outs must be honoured. Do not upload your church directory on the assumption that everyone in it agreed. Build from members who texted your keyword, scanned your QR code or signed up on your website. This is general information rather than legal advice.
Yes, and most churches do. Keywords are unlimited, so you can run separate ones for youth, volunteers, small groups and the prayer team. People self-select into the group they care about, which means you are not sending the nursery rota to the whole congregation.
Within a minute or two. That immediacy is why most churches sign up. A text is read far sooner than an email and does not depend on anyone happening to check social media before they leave the house on a Sunday morning.
Yes. Schedule a week, a month or a season ahead - Advent services, a summer programme, midweek encouragements. You can also send from your phone with a single text when you are not at a computer.
Yes. US carriers require A2P 10DLC registration before any organisation can send texts from a standard 10-digit number, and unregistered traffic gets filtered or blocked. We prepare and submit your registration, make sure your opt-in language passes review, and follow it through to approval.
